“Warfarin diet” in summary

  • Warfarin is the most common drug used to prevent blood clots.
  • Vitamin K is natural antagonist of Warfarin.
  • Warfarin users have to be well aware about their intake of vitamin K rich foods.
  • More important than low intake of vitamin K rich foods is stable intake of vitamin K sources.
  • The best way to learn about contents of vitamin K is to print out lists of foods where foods are listed in individual groups based on vitamin content.
  • The richest vitamin K foods are green leafy vegetables, green vegetables and herbs such as broccoli and parsley. Vitamin K is also fairly well distributed in other foods.
  • Vitamin K is a resilient nutrient and is fairly well retained in most cooked or stored foods.
  • It is necessary for all Warfarin users to inform their doctor before any change in their diet.

Warfarin Diet

Warfarin is an anticoagulant. It reduces the formation of blood clots and is used to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots in veins and arteries. Vitamin K works as a natural antagonist of Warfarin and therefore should be, according to some sources, limited by users of Warfarin. However, many foods high in vitamin K are the super healthy ones such as green leafy vegetables and it would be unwise to avoid them. Therefore, it is better that a low vitamin K diet is well balanced and the doctor will adjust the dose of Warfarin to the vitamin K diet intake and regularly control this. Most important is to consume fairly the same amount of vitamin K rich foods daily and avoid any serious changes in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
