Chronic diseases

Chronic diseases are long-term diseases that are not contagious and are largely preventable. In 2001, chronic diseases accounted for approximately 60% of deaths worldwide. The most common chronic diseases are heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, obesity, dental disease, and osteoporosis. Increasing certain foods and nutrients in the diet and limiting or eliminating others can have a powerful effect on preventing all of these serious health problems. Combining a healthy diet with exercise, not smoking, having a good sleep pattern, stress management, regular exposure to sunshine and fresh air will further support the prevention as well as treatment of chronic diseases. Factors that can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption. Genetic and economic factors, also play a role in developing these diseases but they usually need poor lifestyle choices in order to manifest.
